Vacation Rentals in Costa Rica: Why Jaco Works as Your Base

Vacation Rentals in Costa Rica: Why Jaco Works as Your Base

Costa Rica has two coasts, several beach regions and thousands of rentals. Before choosing a house, most travellers have to choose a region. This guide is for people comparing vacation rentals in Costa Rica and wondering whether Jaco, on the Central Pacific coast, is the right base.

We are a Jaco business, so we will be upfront: Jaco is not the right fit for every trip. Here is what it does well, what it does not, and how to decide.

Costa Rica's Main Beach Regions in Brief

Why Jaco Suits Many Groups

Short Transfer From San José

Jaco is roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from San José International Airport (SJO). For a long weekend, a shorter transfer means more time at the house and less in a van. We can arrange a private driver for the whole group.

Lots of Activities in One Place

Within a short drive of Jaco you have:

Groups with mixed interests can split up during the day and meet at the villa for dinner.

A Real Town

Jaco has supermarkets, restaurants and services, which makes stocking a rental easy. A private chef can shop locally for the group.

When Another Region May Suit You Better

Many travellers combine regions: a few nights in Jaco for the group activities and a few nights elsewhere.

When to Go

The dry season, roughly December to April, brings more sun, more visitors and higher prices. The green season, roughly May to November, is quieter with afternoon rain on many days. Read our rainy season guide to plan around it.

Budgeting a Costa Rica Rental Trip

The rental is usually the biggest cost, followed by transport, food and activities. For groups, shared costs like the villa and a chef fall per person as the group grows. Our Jaco bachelor party cost guide applies to most group trips, and private villas vs resort hotels helps if you are still deciding between a rental and a hotel.
