Documents needed to travel to costa rica

Tourists from all nations are welcome in Costa Rica.

Every visitor is required to follow the immigration and migration procedures outlined in the General Law of Migration and Immigration.

The temporary migratory restrictions put in place as part of the COVID-19-related public health emergency are lifted as of April 1.

To participate in any tourist activity while visiting Costa Rica, visitors must adhere to the health guidelines provided by private companies.

 

For entry into Costa Rica, a round-trip airline ticket is required. When you arrive, the immigration official will request it. It is advisable to make a copy of or take a photo of your passport’s entrance stamp to have with you at all times while you are there.

  • The number of days you are permitted to stay in Costa Rica as a tourist depends on your place of origin.
  • The immigration official may occasionally ask you to provide proof of your ability to support your stay in the nation.
  • Even if you have a 90-day tourist visa, the immigration officer will only let you stay for as long as your passport permits.
Requirements for Entry:
  • Passport valid for duration of stay.
  • Return ticket or proof of onward travel to another country.
  • Proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from certain countries in South America or Africa.
  • Proof of funds for at least $100 USD per month of proposed stay.

US nationals do not require an entry visa to Costa Rica. However, they must have a current valid passport and a return ticket to exit Costa Rica within 90 days. (Either to return to your country or to go to another country). US passport must be valid for a minimum of one day from the day you enter Costa Rica. As a tourist US nationals cannot stay more than 90 days. For a stay longer than 90 days a residence permit must be established.
